Together with clinics and universities

Research in image analysis and 3D visualization

For over a decade, we have been developing and validating methods together with clinical and academic partners – spanning medical image processing and AI-supported analysis as well as 3D visualization and software interaction.

Our approach connects clinical questions with scientific expertise and the transfer of validated prototypes into market-ready products.

From the clinical question to the validated prototype

Successful research combines domain expertise with the technological ability to deliver. Sometimes we contribute our expertise to grant-funded collaborative projects, sometimes we conduct contract research for clinics, universities, and companies – and some initiatives we pursue on our own. A selection of completed and ongoing projects:

OptiKneeBM – software-based expert system for individual guide design for knee implants

OptiKneeBM

A software-based expert system for the individual design of cutting guides for knee implants – with automated 3D segmentation from CT data and interactive surgical planning for patient-specific knee arthroplasty.

Kids-CT – multimodal imaging for a modular CT system for diagnostics in children

Kids-CT

Multimodal imaging for a modular, open CT system for diagnostics in children – with hardware-based 3D registration of interchangeable sensor modules to increase the information content and reduce the radiation dose.

EXPERTEB – expert system for the computer-aided design of individual knee implants

EXPERTEB

An expert system for the computer-aided design of individual knee implants – with automated segmentation and measurement from CT data for the additive manufacturing of custom endoprostheses.

WebSeg – web-based segmentation platform for patient-specific 3D models

WebSeg

A web-based platform for the automated segmentation of clinical image data and the generation of patient-specific 3D models – with treatment planning for prostate cancer as the pilot indication.

VirtualAnatomy – interactive 3D anatomy learning platform

VirtualAnatomy

A web-based learning platform for the interactive exploration of anatomical structures on patient-specific 3D models from real CT and MRI data. The development gave rise to the Dornheim Real Anatomy product.

BIOPASS – markerless image-based navigation system for minimally invasive surgery

BIOPASS

A markerless, image-based navigation system for minimally invasive surgery that operates exclusively on endoscopic video data – with real-time image analysis and 3D surface reconstruction.

OncoControl – web-based clinical decision support system for head and neck oncology

OncoControl

A web-based, interdisciplinary clinical decision support system for head and neck oncology – with interactive 2D/3D views and centralized data management to support the tumor board.

DermaScan Plus – fully automated detection and longitudinal monitoring of skin lesions

DermaScan Plus

A fully automated whole-body imaging system for the AI-supported detection and longitudinal monitoring of skin lesions. Awarded the Hugo Junkers Prize 2014.

This is just a selection of our research projects – over the years, numerous further collaborations with clinics, universities and companies have emerged.
